What a season it’s been.  Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been pure fun and across the spectrum the series seems to have exceeded most everyone’s expectations (mine included).  Friday night we’re treated to the seasons final episode, entitled “Hostage Crisis,” which focuses on the opportunists in the Clone Wars, featuring mercenary Cad Bane, who is billed as the “galaxy’s most fearsome bounty hunter.” It’s going to be fun seeing the fella whose reputation Boba Fett will one day usurp — and of course, I have to appreciate the throwback to the spaghetti westerns in all of that.  It’ll be a long wait until the start of the new season, but here’s hoping we end this one…with a bang.

From Lucasfilm:

The Chilling Season Finale of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS Introduces a Deadly New Enemy – Ruthless Bounty Hunter Cad Bane
The heroes of the Republic have repeatedly beaten back the assaults orchestrated by the evil Separatist forces, but an entirely new threat – lethal mercenary Cad Bane – will emerge from the shadows in “Hostage Crisis,” the thrilling conclusion to the first season of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT Friday, March 20 on Cartoon Network.

Count Dooku seeks to spring a Separatist prisoner from Republic captivity, but his profile prevents him from getting close enough to set in motion his malevolent plan.

Enter Cad Bane, the galaxy’s most fearsome bounty hunter, as ruthless as he is deadly. He is quintessentially cold, cruel and calculating – and when the price is right, he can’t be stopped. Backed by Dooku and the Separatists, he’s bringing his unique skill set and impressive arsenal to bear against the very heart of the Republic. Bane brazenly brings the fight to the Senate’s doorstep, with a rogues gallery of galactic scum as his allies.

“This episode gave us the chance to do something totally different, to go in a new direction with the series,” says supervising director Dave Filoni. “We’ve seen the good guys and the bad guys, from the top of the food chain to the cannon fodder on the front lines. Now we get to look at some of the opportunists, at the mercenaries operating without a side. It’s a whole new dynamic we haven’t seen yet, and at the same time it’s very Star Wars.”

Patterned after the laconic gunslingers of spaghetti Westerns, Bane is lethally cool and relishes being a bad guy. He is unflappable in the face of danger, and even welcomes the opportunity to pit his formidable skills against the legendary prowess of the Jedi Knights. Filoni says the inspiration from the red-eyed bounty hunter came directly from George Lucas.

“He had a clear idea for this bad guy who plays by his own set of rules, whose moral code is dictated by his fee,” says Filoni. “And he had sketches and concepts dating back to the original films. If Boba Fett was sort of the Man With No Name of the Star Wars galaxy, then Cad Bane is his counterpoint – his Lee Van Cleef. So that’s how we built the character, with that in mind. It’s a cool parallel to our world, and a cool balance in theirs.”

Making his STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS debut in Friday’s season finale, Bane has already established a place as a fan-favorite – among the series’ creators and crew.

“The crew loves Cad Bane, and I really think the fans will, too,” says episode director Giancarlo Volpe. “He brings a serious bad-ass sensibility to Star Wars. He’s a lethal and ruthless bounty hunter, and you see that right away in the episode. Unlike Boba Fett, Cad doesn’t take prisoners.”

If there was ever a comic book equivalent of The Little Engine That Could, the one who defiantly faces an uphill battle crying “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can” — it has to be Marvel’s Spider-Girl.  She’s been on the brink of cancellation more than [8] times, and has been saved by the impassioned plea’s and hard work of fans and creators that felt she deserved better each and every time.   She never gave up in her book, and her fans never gave up on her.  Unfortunately, it appeared that with the release of Amazing Spider-Girl #30 (which just hit store shelves) that Mayday’s time as the solo star of her own book was finally up, despite all the efforts that went into saving the book time and again, BUT all is not lost and there’s definitely good news on that front.   Mayday Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Girl, will be the star of a new digital comic all her own as part of Marvel’s Digital Comics Unlimited initiative.

Here’s the official word, from Comic Book Resources:

At first, she was just SPIDER-GIRL. Then she became the AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL. Now, Mayday Parker, the future daughter of Spider-Man goes digital in the all-new THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-GIRL #1! Marvel is pleased to announce that Spider-Girl will return in an all new series, exclusive to the groundbreaking Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited (http://www.marvel.com/digitalcomics), beginning April 15th!

Written by co-creator, Tom DeFalco, drawn by co-creator, Ron Frenz, and inked by Sal Buscema, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-GIRL #1 debuts on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited as part of the subscription service’s exclusive digital comics program. The story will appear in print two weeks later in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #5 on sale Wednesday, April 29th.

Spider-Girl fans can gear up for THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-GIRL’s digital debut by reading FREE Spider-Girl digital comics right now at:

spider-girl_c11Honestly, digital comics are not my preferred format (being unable to “collect” them), but I’m very glad to hear that she has a home here, the ASF comic, and that Spider-Girl creator’s Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz (with Sal Buscema on inks!) are still devoted and at the helm.  I’ll look into the series, definitely, and am awful glad that fellow fans have a place to continue to enjoy her adventures.  All that hard work just continues to pay off and it’s proving more and more all the time that Mayday Parker really is “spectacular.”
