I’ve heard nothing but good things about Umbrella Academy, but beyond reading a short story and synopsis, I really know very little about the book beyond its reputation. I’m considering picking it up soon and would appreciate any thoughts any of you might have about the series?
The Umbrella Academy, Apocalypse Suite

I enjoyed it plenty, but felt it could’ve done with out so much over the top violence. I wasn’t expecting to see that many spilled brains. Still, I love the premise and the characters. And Ba’s art is really inspirational.
I was absolutely thrilled with the series. The story was great, the art was perfect for the book and the characters are very interesting and unique.
Now, the sequel hasn’t been AS good as the first series, but it’s still good.
Besides Academy, if you’re looking for some Indy books to try, you HAVE to check out The Walking Dead (there’s a 48 issue HC vol. for order this month for a minute price of $35.99).
I would also highly recommend Invincible, Dynamo 5, and The Sword.
It falls into the “mad ideas” family of comics like some of Grant Morrison’s work (ie, Seaguy). As an Allred fan you have a taste for the bizzare already, so it may be up your alley. I enjoyed Apocalypse Suite, I was in the mood for something frothy and quirky. I’m planning on follow the rest via trades.
And I’ll second Invincible (which I know you’ve started reading) and Dynamo 5 (DO read if you haven’t).
Thanks for taking the time to let me know what you thought guys. I’ll definitely give it the good ‘ol college try and try to post my thoughts on it once I’ve devoured it.
I also appreciate the recommendations. I read Invincible as often as I can afford the larger collections, and enjoyed the first volume of Dynamo 5 enough to look for more down the road. I’d love to try the Walking Dead (beyond the free story I read online) but I’ll have to wait a bit for a break in the budget to jump in.
And, hey, should you have anything else to recommend, I’m all ears.
