It is my firm belief that we best honor those who have imparted great wisdom by striving to apply it, and in celebrating President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday today (his 200th) perhaps we can take a moment to pay heed to a particular nugget, one applicable to these turbulent times in which we live.
Lincoln once warned that “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” It’s a bold statement, but one that strikes a truthful chord with me. So many great men, women and patriots have worked so hard to provide and protect the freedoms that we now enjoy and how quick we are at times to forget, and even disregard those sacrifices. With the world being in the shape that it is, if there was ever a time to check ourselves, it’s now — starting with our own moats before addressing our neighbors beams. So, if you’re so inclined, pray that Providence will guide us, pray for our leaders, and that our fellow American’s will choose the right things for the right reasons. Because as Abraham Lincoln also said, putting a positive spin on things:
I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis.
God Bless America, and here’s to Abraham Lincoln on his birthday!
